Event Overview:
This educational demonstration offers attendees the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of safe home canning. Ideal for beginners or anyone looking to refresh their skills, the class provides a clear overview of proper preservation methods for fruits, vegetables, and other foods.
Please note: This is not a hands-on workshop. Participants are invited to observe, take notes, and ask questions throughout the demonstration.
What You’ll Learn:
🫙 Canning Methods
Water Bath/Steam Canning: For high-acid foods such as fruits, jams, jellies, pickles, and tomato products (with added acid)
Pressure Canning: For low-acid foods like vegetables, meats, poultry, beans, and soups, using high-temperature steam to ensure safe preservation
🍅 Tested Recipes Only
Instruction emphasizes the use of scientifically tested canning recipes from trusted sources, including the USDA, Ball, and the National Center for Home Food Preservation.
🧴 Required Equipment
An overview of essential canning tools, including jars, lids, canners, jar lifters, funnels, towels, and bubble removers.
🔥 Safe Canning Steps
Guidance through the recommended process for jar preparation, filling, headspace, sealing, processing times, and checking seals after cooling.
📦 Labeling & Storage
Tips for properly labeling jars and storing finished goods in a cool, dry location for optimal quality.
