It’s Time for Term Limits in Nevada County

Nevada County has a long and proud history of civic participation and self-reliance. As Chairman of the Nevada County Republican Party, I believe it's time we apply those values to reforming how our local government operates—starting with our Board of Supervisors.

That’s why the Nevada County Republican Party has formally submitted a Notice of Intent to enact term limits for the Board of Supervisors. If passed by voters in June 2026, this measure would place a lifetime cap of two terms for anyone serving on the Board, whether those terms are consecutive or not. It's a fair, forward-thinking proposal that strengthens democracy, encourages public service, and restores trust in our local government.

This isn’t about any one person—it’s about the structure of accountability. No elected official should hold power indefinitely. Public office is a public trust, not a lifelong entitlement or a stepping stone for higher office.

Why We’re Leading This Effort (and it’s long overdue)

Term limits help level the playing field by ensuring regular turnover and encouraging broader participation in the democratic process.

Two terms—eight years—is more than enough time for a supervisor to make a meaningful impact. If someone can’t accomplish their goals in that time, it may be time to let someone else try. Term limits keep our leaders focused on results, not re-election.

Long-term incumbency can unintentionally gatekeep leadership positions from younger citizens, women, and people with fresh ideas. This measure opens the door to a more diverse and responsive Board—one that better reflects the community it serves. More turnover means more opportunity for citizens from every walk of life to step forward and serve.

Limited terms bring urgency. Knowing there’s a time limit compels elected officials to prioritize the people’s work—not political survival. This initiative encourages supervisors to lead boldly and effectively, without the temptation to kick the can down the road.

What This Initiative Actually Does

The measure, if enough voters choose to support it on June 2, 2026 establishes the following:

  • No one may serve more than two terms on the Nevada County Board of Supervisors.

  • The measure applies prospectively only—starting January 1, 2027—so no current or past supervisor is penalized.

  • Partial terms longer than two years count as full terms, closing any potential loopholes.

  • Former and current supervisors may still serve two additional terms, so long as those begin after January 1, 2027.

It’s simple, fair, and in full accordance with California Government Code § 25000, which allows counties to impose term limits through a vote of the people.

We’re Joining a Proven Movement

As of today, 17 California Counties already have term limits for their Boards of Supervisors—including El Dorado, Fresno, Kern, Orange, San Diego, and Shasta. Many of these counties have seen greater political diversity, stronger civic engagement, and a more energized local government as a result.

Nevada County shouldn’t be the exception. We should be the next.

Not a Partisan Issue—A Voter-Driven Reform

Let me be clear: this isn’t about partisanship. It’s about principles. The Republican Party is leading this effort because we believe in limited government, individual opportunity, and accountability in leadership. But term limits are supported across the political spectrum. Nationally, over 75% of Americans favor term limits for elected officials. It’s common sense—and it's time to bring that same logic home.

A Clear Timeline, A Public Voice

This initiative is already on a clear path to the June 2, 2026 ballot. The petition process is underway, with signature gathering expected to begin soon. If enough registered voters sign on, the initiative will be placed before the people, where it belongs.

Let the voters decide. That’s what democracy looks like.

A Message to Our Community

We respect the work of many current and former supervisors. This measure isn’t personal, it’s structural. It’s about creating a fair, competitive, and accountable system that works for every citizen, not just those already in office.

If passed, this reform will ensure that public service in Nevada County remains just that—service. Not a career. Not a stronghold. Not a revolving door of re-election.

The Republican Party’s Commitment

The Nevada County Republican Party stands for government that is responsive, accountable, and reflective of the people. Term limits are a powerful tool to help achieve that. This measure aligns with our values and with the will of a growing number of voters who are demanding change.

We invite every citizen—Republican, Democrat, Independent, and beyond—to support this movement. Let’s send a message that no seat belongs to anyone forever. Let’s create a healthier, more dynamic local government that puts service above self-interest.

Let’s enact term limits in Nevada County.
